Located in the midst of the North Carolina mountains near Asheville, the secluded environment of Black Mountain College fostered a strong sense of individuality and creative intensity during its years of operation from 1933-1957—making it a key setting in which 20th-century artists revolutionized modern art. Experimental Impulse will feature a selection of more than 30 works by some of the most adventurous artists associated with Black Mountain College such as Josef and Anni Albers, Leo Amino, Ruth Asawa, John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Motherwell, and Robert Rauschenberg. Even now, decades after its closing in 1957, the school’s powerful influence continues to reverberate.
