SUMMARY:Cocktails & Conversation with John Sanders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Cocktails & Conversation with John Sanders as he shares his discovery\, passion\, and restoration of the Little Switzerland neighborhood through the exhibition Seeds of Regionalism. Sanders was attending the University of Tennessee as an architecture student when he first became aware of the neighborhood of modern regionalism homes built in South Knoxville by Alfred and Jane West Clauss in the 1930s and 40s. Today\, these restored homes carry on the legacy of modern regionalism in the South. \nCocktails & Conversation is a casual lecture and discussion series that explores the art and artist of the KMA collection and temporary exhibitions. Enjoy a cocktail while you learn from artists\, curators\, historians\, and community leaders on a variety of art media and styles. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER—\nJOHN LYNCH SANDERS\, FAIA\nLEED AP PRINCIPAL-IN-CHARGE + FOUNDING PARTNER SANDERS PACE ARCHITECTURE \nJohn is a founding partner of Sanders Pace Architecture\, created in 2002 primarily for a focus on design opportunities within Knoxville’s urban core and its immediate surrounding neighborhoods. His passion for design can be seen on the challenging projects that he and his firm have been involved within those areas. John’s work is meaningful\, creative\, and inspirational. His influence is evident in the thoughtful rehabilitation of forgotten\, neglected buildings in fringe neighborhoods\, elevation of overlooked project typologies\, and energetic service through teaching and civic engagement. John is an active member of the AIA and has served on the State Board and planning committees and as local chapter president. He has served and chaired on several chapter design award juries and in 2015 and 2019 served as co-chair of the AIA Tennessee State Convention. During his tenures on the AIA East Tennessee and AIA Tennessee Chapters’ Board\, Mr. Sanders was integral in creating and implementing a new licensee program to recognize the accomplishments of emerging professionals at local and state levels and formally celebrating the milestone of licensure and they have become a signature part of his region and state design awards programs. John continues to chair the Programming Committee for AIA East Tennessee where he leads the programming efforts for the Design Feed Lecture Series. John is a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he has served as an Adjunct Lecturer. He continues to participate as an invited studio critic and juror for the College of Architecture and Design. \nJohn was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2018 in recognition of his contributions to the profession and was awarded the AIA East Tennessee Gold Medal in 2024 along with SPA founding partner\, Brandon F. Pace. The Gold Medal is the AIA East Tennessee chapter’s highest honor that can be bestowed upon one of its members. Brandon and John were also named 2024 Preservationists of the Year as defined by Knox Heritage. \nLight refreshments and a cash bar are available beginning at 5:30 pm\, and the lecture begins promptly at 6:00 pm\, followed by time for audience questions. \nFree and open to the public!  \nIMAGE: Bruce Cole for the Wall Street Journal

DESCRIPTION:Join us on your lunch break for a discussion on the Clauss Family Legacy with Avigail Sachs\, Professor and Interim Associate Dean for Research\, College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee. Sachs will share her discoveries on the life and work of Jane West Clauss that she found during her research for a biography in The Collection of Women of the 20th Century American Architecture. As well as stories from Alfred Clauss’s work at TVA\, and memories of the Clauss Family’s time in Knoxville. \nDine & Discover is a lunchtime lecture where you can learn about the art in the KMA’s collection or changing exhibitions. Hear from artists\, curators\, historians\, and community leaders on a variety of art topics during your lunch break. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER—\nAvigail Sachs teaches the history and theory of architecture and landscape at the University of Tennessee and studies the design professions in the United States. In 2019\, she published a biography of Jane West Clauss as part The Collection of Women of the 20th Century American Architecture\, which is supported by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts. The TVA is the subject of her book The Garden in the Machine: Planning and Democracy in the Tennessee Valley Authority (University of Virginia Press\, 2023). She is currently completing a collaborative project with colleague and friend Micah Rutenberg titled The Mechanized Landscape: Statecraft and Environment in the Tennessee Valley Authority. This project combines maps\, photographs and text to provide a visual study of how the TVA’s goals for a democratic society were implemented across a large region and how they instigated a fundamental change in the environment and in the lives of the people living in it. \nLecture begins at 12:00 pm; bring your lunch or order in advance by emailing dfeliciano@knoxart.org by 10:00 am Monday\, October 6. SUMMARY:Cocktails & Conversation with Amy Boone-McCreesh
DESCRIPTION:Visual artist and educator Amy Boone-McCreesh\, from Baltimore\, MD\, is a current Artist in Residence at Loghaven Artist Residency in Knoxville\, TN. Much like the artist Jo Sandman\, Boone-McCreesh works in experimental methods exploring the use of non-conventional materials. Although their results are vastly different\, Sandman leans more minimalistic and Boone-McCreesh is a self-proclaimed maximalist\, their method for arriving at these conclusions follows a similar path. Additionally\, both artists have had the unique opportunity to explore their creative freedom through time spent at artists’ retreats such as Black Mountain College and Loghaven. \nABOUT THE ARTIST—\nAmy Boone-McCreesh was born on Loring Air Force Base in Maine. Her upbringing instilled in her an interest in the connections between aesthetic leanings within economic and cultural status. She has a heightened visual awareness of the ways people and spaces flaunt class\, taste\, and access. Amy received her BFA from Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and MFA from Towson University in Maryland\, and shortly thereafter was awarded a two-year Hamiltonian Artist Fellowship in Washington\, DC. Amy has been based in Baltimore\, Maryland for the last fifteen years. Her work has been included in exhibitions across the country. In addition to her own studio practice\, Amy has a committed relationship to visual arts education\, running the web–based studio visit series INERTIA\, and is adjunct faculty at MICA and Towson University. \nLight refreshments and a cash bar are available beginning at 5:30 pm\, and the lecture begins promptly at 6:00 pm. \nFree and open to the public!  \nPortrait of Amy Boone-McCreesh by Jill Fannon
