SUMMARY:Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South
DESCRIPTION:Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South celebrates the growth of the KMA’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. It also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history\, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent\, influential artists with ties to the area\, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. This special Higher Ground spotlight exhibition will be on view from November 1\, 2025 through April 12\, 2026. \nIMAGE: Henri Cartier-Bresson (Chanteloup-en-Brie\, France 1908-2004 Céreste\, France)\, Knoxville\, Tennessee\, 1947\, gelatin silver print\, 12 x 16 inches\, Knoxville Museum of Art\, 2019 purchase with funds provided by June and Rob Heller\, Jim Martin\, James L. SUMMARY:Knoxville Collects: Susana Navarro
DESCRIPTION:Knoxville Collects: Susana Navarro \nKramer Education Center \nApril 3 through May 24\, 2026 \nReception May 17\, 12-2pm \n  \nThe Knoxville Museum of Art will celebrate the many interests and idiosyncrasies inhabiting the collections that live within our city. From icons of art history to eccentric compilations of kitsch\, this series offers snapshots of the many individuals who help make Knoxville unique. \n  \nThis inaugural presentation of Knoxville Collects features the collection of Susana Navarro\, a Knoxville-based collector and entrepreneur whose perspective is shaped by her upbringing in Mexico City\, and by a family of women who embody resilience and leadership. Trained as an engineer\, she co-founded Navarro Research and Engineering in 1993\, which works in nuclear\, environmental\, and clean energy fields across the United States. Navarro built her collection in a very personal manner\, marrying art historical research with works that reflect her experiences and ambitions for the world; what she had seen\, and what she hoped to see in the future. \n  \nRather than organizing works by movement or chronology\, Navarro brings together modern Latin American and French Post-Impressionist paintings in close proximity\, allowing them to speak across difference. Through this selection\, visitors are offered a window into Navarro’s life\, her way of seeing\, and the objects that accompany her. \n  \nImage: Diego Rivera Vendedor de Maiz 1944

SUMMARY:Music for Seniors Songwriting Workshop with Bill Cabage
DESCRIPTION:Music for Seniors Songwriting Workshop with Bill Cabage \nThursday\, April 9\, 2026\n11:00am-1:00pm\nFree with registration \nSpace is limited\, register in advance: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n(Registration is conducted through Music for Seniors) \nJoin Music for Seniors for this FREE songwriting workshop sponsored by the Tennessee Art Commission and hosted by the Knoxville Museum of Art! \nEveryone has a story to tell\, and our gifted songwriter\, Bill Cabage\, facilitates a fun and interactive songwriting workshop. As they learn the basic elements of a good song\, participants contribute ideas and creativity to write one together. By the end of the workshop\, their song has been crafted both lyrically and musically\, and the group performs it together\, led by the teaching artist. \nThe Knoxville Museum of Art is happy to partner with Music for Seniors on this program. Check back for our fall concert collaboration on August 27th! \nMusic for Seniors connects area musicians with older adults through live and interactive music programs designed to engage\, entertain and educate seniors – promoting health and wellbeing\, reducing isolation and enriching the lives of all participants. \nMUSIC FOR SENIORS \nWorkshop attendees should plan to arrive early and visit the Wayne White: Revenge of the Knoxville Girl exhibition. Wayne White created giant\, large-than-life-size puppets based on the very old Murder Ballad The Knoxville Girl\, famously recorded by the Louvin Brothers in the 1950s but dating back to traditional English and Irish murder ballads of the 1800s. In White’s version\, the Knoxville Girl takes revenge on the lover who did her wrong\, and the puppets dance and play the fiddle.
