KMA Book Club meets 3 times a year giving you plenty of time to read\, re-read\, and enjoy a book related to the arts.\n\nJune 2026: “My Friends”\, a Novel by Fredrik Backman\nMost people don’t even notice them—three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. But Louisa\, an aspiring artist herself\, knows otherwise\, and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures. \nTwenty-five years earlier\, in a distant seaside town\, a group of teenagers find refuge from their bruising home lives by spending long summer days on an abandoned pier. These lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning\, a reason to dream\, a reason to love. \nOut of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art\, a painting that will unexpectedly be placed into eighteen-year-old Louisa’s care. She embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. The closer she gets to the painting’s birthplace\, the more nervous she becomes about what she’ll find. For the past nine years\, Cattywampus has been bringing innovative theater\, youth programming\, people-powered parades\, and giant puppet magic to communities across East Tennessee and the South. In connection with the Wayne White: Revenge of the Knoxville Girl exhibition (up through July 12)\, Milford will share her experience working with giant puppets\, building community collaboration by organizing puppet parades\, and how that has influenced and shaped her career as an artist. \nRachel Milford\, Founder\, Executive Director\, & Art Director for Cattywampus Puppet Council\, is a Knoxville-based artist and brings with her over 20 years of experience in visual art\, theater\, storytelling\, and youth education. Wayne White created giant\, large-than-life-size puppets based on the very old Murder Ballad The Knoxville Girl\, famously recorded by the Louvin Brothers in the 1950s but dating back to traditional English and Irish murder ballads of the 1800s. In White’s version\, the Knoxville Girl takes revenge on the lover who did her wrong\, and the puppets dance and play the fiddle.

From icons of art history to eccentric compilations of kitsch\, this series offers snapshots of the many individuals who help make Knoxville unique. \n  \nThis inaugural presentation of Knoxville Collects features the collection of Susana Navarro\, a Knoxville-based collector and entrepreneur whose perspective is shaped by her upbringing in Mexico City\, and by a family of women who embody resilience and leadership. Trained as an engineer\, she co-founded Navarro Research and Engineering in 1993\, which works in nuclear\, environmental\, and clean energy fields across the United States. Navarro built her collection in a very personal manner\, marrying art historical research with works that reflect her experiences and ambitions for the world; what she had seen\, and what she hoped to see in the future. \n  \nRather than organizing works by movement or chronology\, Navarro brings together modern Latin American and French Post-Impressionist paintings in close proximity\, allowing them to speak across difference. SUMMARY:Curator's Talk on Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South
DESCRIPTION:KMA curator Stephen Wicks will lead an informal talk on Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South\, a special display within the museum’s flagship Higher Ground exhibition. Raking Light features a selection of 19 black and white prints that attest to the growth of the Knoxville Museum of Art’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. The selection also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history\, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent\, influential artists with ties to the area\, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. Together\, they helped document the region’s evolving identity over the course of much of the twentieth century and\, in several cases\, their artistic paths intersected. \nCocktails and light refreshments at 5:30 pm\, the talk will begin at 6:00 pm in Regal Commons. Guests are invited to explore the Spotlight on Higher Ground exhibition – Raking Light in the 2nd floor gallery before and after the talk. \nFREE and open to the public!

SUMMARY:The Bikeriders Screening at Central Cinema
DESCRIPTION:A continuing collaboration with Central Cinema! \nLocation: Central Cinema\, 1205 N Central St\, Knoxville\, TN 37917 \nABOUT THE FILM—\nThe Bikeriders (2023) is a crime drama directed by Jeff Nichols starring Jodie Comer\, Austin Butler\, Tom Hardy\, and Michael Shannon. Inspired by the photo book of the same title by Danny Lyon\, the film depicts the lives of the Vandals Motorcycle Club\, a fictional version of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Danny Lyon\, portrayed in the film by Mike Faist\, spent years embedded in the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. From 1963 to 1967 Lyon documented the club and captured a fascinating and popular body of work. \nIn 1967 Lyon stopped by the small town of Knoxville\, Tennessee to visit the birthplace of one of his idols\, James Agee\, while on his way to New Orleans. Lyon had only intended to make a short visit to Agee’s hometown\, but enamored by the city and people of Knoxville\, he ended up staying for days and produced what he said\, at that point\, had been his most productive and prolific 5 days of photography. \nA selection of those 1967 Knoxville photographs is currently on view in the ongoing KMA exhibition\, Higher Ground. “Finding Higher Ground” is an ongoing series of events intended to expand upon the historical exhibition and catalog Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee. The KMA’s Higher Ground spotlight exhibition Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South celebrates the growth of the KMA’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. It also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history\, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent\, influential artists with ties to the area\, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. This Higher Ground spotlight exhibition will be on view through April 12\, 2026. \nMembers: FREE | Non-members: $5
