SUMMARY:BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING - Screening at Central Cinema
DESCRIPTION:KMA presents BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING with special guest Wayne White • $5 screening Wednesday March 18\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to welcome Chattanooga born\, LA based pop art legend Wayne White to Central Cinema as he introduces this 2012 documentary about his varied and fascinating career. This one-off screening ($5 for the general public and FREE for KMA members and members of the Poetry Guild) is presented as part of our ongoing series with Central Cinema.\n\n\nBEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a funny\, irreverent\, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of America’s most important artists\, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee\, Wayne White started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show\, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse\, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently\, his word paintings\, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings\, have made him a darling of the fine art world.\n\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, March 18th\nTime: 7:45 pm\nTickets: $5 for the public | FREE for Knoxville Museum of Art members – Tickets can be purchased at the door.\n\n\n\nBEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator\, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious\, biographical one-man show. At its core\, BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a reminder that we should all follow our passion. It is those creative impulses that will lead us to where we need to go.\n\n\n“A vivid\, fluorescent-colored portrait of a sane man possessed with insane creativity.”- Village Voice

SUMMARY:KMA Book Club Discussing "Saving Vincent"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss Saving Vincent: A Novel of Jo Van Gogh by Joan Fernandez. The KMA Book Club meets every 4 months to review an inspiring piece of literature that relates our lives to artists\, history\, and culture! Contact Margo Clark\, mclark@knoxart.org\, for details.\n\nABOUT THE BOOK—\nHow did a failed belligerent Dutch painter become one of the greatest artists of our time? \nIn 1891\, timid Jo van Gogh Bonger lives safely in the background of her art dealer husband Theo’s passionate work to sell unknown artists\, especially his ill-fated dead brother Vincent. When Theo dies unexpectedly\, Jo’s brief happiness is shattered. Her inheritance—hundreds of unsold paintings by Vincent—is worthless. Pressured to move to her parents’ home\, Jo defies tradition\, opening a boarding house to raise her infant son alone\, and choosing to promote Vincent’s art herself. But her ingenuity and persistence draw the powerful opposition of a Parisian art dealer who vows to stop her once and for all\, and so sink Vincent into obscurity. \nSaving Vincent reveals there was more than one genius in the Van Gogh family. \nFREE and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Curator's Talk on Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South
DESCRIPTION:KMA curator Stephen Wicks will lead an informal talk on Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South\, a special display within the museum’s flagship Higher Ground exhibition. Raking Light features a selection of 19 black and white prints that attest to the growth of the Knoxville Museum of Art’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. The selection also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history\, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent\, influential artists with ties to the area\, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. Together\, they helped document the region’s evolving identity over the course of much of the twentieth century and\, in several cases\, their artistic paths intersected. \nCocktails and light refreshments at 5:30 pm\, the talk will begin at 6:00 pm in Regal Commons. Guests are invited to explore the Spotlight on Higher Ground exhibition – Raking Light in the 2nd floor gallery before and after the talk. \nFREE and open to the public!

SUMMARY:The Bikeriders Screening at Central Cinema
DESCRIPTION:A continuing collaboration with Central Cinema! \nLocation: Central Cinema\, 1205 N Central St\, Knoxville\, TN 37917 \nABOUT THE FILM—\nThe Bikeriders (2023) is a crime drama directed by Jeff Nichols starring Jodie Comer\, Austin Butler\, Tom Hardy\, and Michael Shannon. Inspired by the photo book of the same title by Danny Lyon\, the film depicts the lives of the Vandals Motorcycle Club\, a fictional version of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Danny Lyon\, portrayed in the film by Mike Faist\, spent years embedded in the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. From 1963 to 1967 Lyon documented the club and captured a fascinating and popular body of work. \nIn 1967 Lyon stopped by the small town of Knoxville\, Tennessee to visit the birthplace of one of his idols\, James Agee\, while on his way to New Orleans. Lyon had only intended to make a short visit to Agee’s hometown\, but enamored by the city and people of Knoxville\, he ended up staying for days and produced what he said\, at that point\, had been his most productive and prolific 5 days of photography. \nA selection of those 1967 Knoxville photographs is currently on view in the ongoing KMA exhibition\, Higher Ground. “Finding Higher Ground” is an ongoing series of events intended to expand upon the historical exhibition and catalog Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee. The KMA’s Higher Ground spotlight exhibition Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South celebrates the growth of the KMA’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. It also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history\, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent\, influential artists with ties to the area\, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. This Higher Ground spotlight exhibition will be on view through April 12\, 2026. \nMembers: FREE | Non-members: $5

SUMMARY:The Body is a Drum\, The Voice a Song\, The Soul a Fire Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm Members Only Hour\n5:45 pm Artist Dialogue with Tabatha Arnold and Dianna Settles\nModerated by KMA Assistant Curator Kelsie Conley\n6:30 pm Reception Opens to Non-Members\n7:00 pm + 8:00 pm Performances by The Knox Honkers and Bangers\nA Program Under Cattywampus Puppet Council\nHors d’oeuvres from Real Good Kitchen + Cupcakes from Magpies Bakery\nCash Bar + Specialty Beverage\n\nABOUT THE EXHIBITION—\nThe Body is a Drum\, The Voice a Song\, The Soul a Fire  brings together the work of Tabitha Arnold\, Dianna Settles\, and Lewis Hine— artists who call attention to the lives shaped by labor: its intimacies\, its struggles\, its persistence. Arnold’s tapestries weave together a history of labor movements in the Southeast\, Settles’ paintings reveal the collective heartbeat where everyday life and organizing work meet\, and Hine’s photographs capture the daily realities and inequities of industrial labor in early 20th-century East Tennessee. The exhibition draws from the audio archives of the Highlander Center\, a wellspring of resistance that has preserved the music and voices of labor organizers\, civil rights leaders\, and the people who built this country with their hands. These images and sounds\, both past and present\, are not just records of labor\, but testaments to the histories that shape us still. \nFREE and open to the public! \nIMAGE (LEFT TO RIGHT): Dianna Settles\, Hundredth Repetition\, After High Noon\, 2025\, acrylic and colored pencil on panel\, 24 x 32 inches; Dianna Settles\, Hundredth Repetition\, After High Noon\, 2025\, acrylic and colored pencil on panel\, 24 x 32 inches; Lewis Hine photographs are courtesy of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on permanent loan to the Hunter Museum of American Art\, Chattanooga\, Tennessee; Tabitha Arnold\, Mill Town\, 2024.
