Wayne White created giant\, large-than-life-size puppets based on the very old Murder Ballad The Knoxville Girl\, famously recorded by the Louvin Brothers in the 1950s but dating back to traditional English and Irish murder ballads of the 1800s. In White’s version\, the Knoxville Girl takes revenge on the lover who did her wrong\, and the puppets dance and play the fiddle.

SUMMARY:BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING - Screening at Central Cinema
DESCRIPTION:KMA presents BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING with special guest Wayne White • $5 screening Wednesday March 18\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to welcome Chattanooga born\, LA based pop art legend Wayne White to Central Cinema as he introduces this 2012 documentary about his varied and fascinating career. This one-off screening ($5 for the general public and FREE for KMA members and members of the Poetry Guild) is presented as part of our ongoing series with Central Cinema.\n\n\nBEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a funny\, irreverent\, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of America’s most important artists\, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee\, Wayne White started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show\, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse\, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently\, his word paintings\, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings\, have made him a darling of the fine art world.\n\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, March 18th\nTime: 7:45 pm\nTickets: $5 for the public | FREE for Knoxville Museum of Art members – Tickets can be purchased at the door.\n\n\n\nBEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator\, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious\, biographical one-man show. At its core\, BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a reminder that we should all follow our passion. It is those creative impulses that will lead us to where we need to go.\n\n\n“A vivid\, fluorescent-colored portrait of a sane man possessed with insane creativity.”- Village Voice

SUMMARY:Event Reception for TRASHFORMATION by A1LabArts
DESCRIPTION:“Trashformation\,” chosen by A1 members as the theme for this show\, suggests many creative possibilities: using trash as art material\, portraying trash (and its formation/transformation) as subject matter\, as well as using the idea of “trashformation” as commentary\, as allegory or metaphor\, as a challenge\, or just as a starting point from which to proceed elsewhere. Artists here have addressed it in various ways and to various degrees\, with some A1 members creating items for a collectively made “garden.” Juried by Jason Brown\, Professor\, University of Tennessee School of Art. \nFeaturing work by:\nJohn Allen\, Robert Batey\, Richard Bennett\, Vanessa Black\, Neranza Noel Blount\, Heather Bosau\, Kimberly Brown\, Maggie Connolly\, Yvonne Dalschen\, Drew Ellis\, Susie Feinberg\, Kelly Ferguson\, Chrissy Fowler\, Joyce Gralak\, Jessica Gregory\, Annamaria Gundlach\, Pam Harris\, Jean Hess\, Ame Houston\, Leslie Hymel\, Stacy Jacobs\, Andreas Koschan\, Merry Koschan\, Hsiu-Yi Lai\, Sandy Lee\, David Liles\, Lana Lindorfer\, Kayla Lingerfelt\, Shelley Mangold\, Mary Nietling\, Richard Olowoyo\, Hei Park\, Elizabeth Porter\, Kathy Seely\, Eric Sherwood\, Jennifer Simon\, Manderly Swain\, Wendi Tang\, Emily Taylor\, Bob Thompson\, Bev Tomov\, Steven Varga\, and Ariel Woods \nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS:\nReception I Sunday\, February 22\, 2:00-4:00 pm \nABOUT A1LABARTS—\nA1LabArts actively participates and develops arts venues in Knoxville by its working board and member volunteers. \n\nDevelop educational events and activities including\, but not limited to\, presentations\, lectures\, seminars\, forums and published text materials that introduce community audiences to contemporary forms of art.\nA1LabArts actively participates and develops arts venues in Knoxville by its working board and volunteers through various committees.\nProvide opportunities for community artists to showcase their works.\nEstablish new and appreciative audiences for interdisciplinary arts in order to support the works of interactive artists throughout the community\nAct as clearing house through which artists can advertise their works and contact other artists throughout the country.\n\nLearn more at www.a1labarts.com. \nA1LabArts\, Inc.\, a Tennessee nonprofit corporation\, is a Knoxville-based\, artists’ group with a 30-year history of encouraging creativity and community. SUMMARY:KMA Book Club Discussing "Saving Vincent"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss Saving Vincent: A Novel of Jo Van Gogh by Joan Fernandez. The KMA Book Club meets every 4 months to review an inspiring piece of literature that relates our lives to artists\, history\, and culture! Contact Margo Clark\, mclark@knoxart.org\, for details.\n\nABOUT THE BOOK—\nHow did a failed belligerent Dutch painter become one of the greatest artists of our time? \nIn 1891\, timid Jo van Gogh Bonger lives safely in the background of her art dealer husband Theo’s passionate work to sell unknown artists\, especially his ill-fated dead brother Vincent. When Theo dies unexpectedly\, Jo’s brief happiness is shattered. Her inheritance—hundreds of unsold paintings by Vincent—is worthless. Pressured to move to her parents’ home\, Jo defies tradition\, opening a boarding house to raise her infant son alone\, and choosing to promote Vincent’s art herself. But her ingenuity and persistence draw the powerful opposition of a Parisian art dealer who vows to stop her once and for all\, and so sink Vincent into obscurity. \nSaving Vincent reveals there was more than one genius in the Van Gogh family. \nFREE and open to the public!
