SUMMARY:The Maltese Falcon at Central Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Join the Knoxville Museum of Art for a special screening of The Maltese Falcon (1941) at Central Cinema\, introduced by Eleni Palis\, Associate Professor of English and Cinema Studies at the University of Tennessee. This event celebrates Melancholia in Arcadia\, the current exhibition at the Eugenia Williams House\, and explores the visual language shared by film noir and Gabriel’s evocative installation. \nWidely regarded as one of the defining works of film noir\, The Maltese Falcon marked the directorial debut of John Huston and established many of the genre’s enduring visual and narrative conventions. Before the screening\, Dr. Palis—author of Classical Projections (Oxford University Press\, 2022) and a scholar whose work has appeared in Film Quarterly\, Camera Obscura\, Screen\, and Cinema Journal—will introduce the film and discuss its relationship to the exhibition. \nAs Gabriel reflects\, “If cinema is a language\, then it also has punctuation. Generally\, these punctuating elements of cinema are what is called the mood shots or other shots that punctuate the narrative like for instance\, the establishing shot. Now\, if anything\, Melancholia in Arcadia is a mood shot.” Mood shots\, establishing shots\, and other visual moments shape the emotional rhythm of a film. In that spirit\, Melancholia in Arcadia can be understood as a kind of cinematic mood shot: an image drawn from the vocabulary of film noir that announces the arrival of something or someone\, while inviting viewers into a space of mystery\, anticipation\, and atmosphere. \nScreening Details:\nWednesday\, August 5\n6:00 PM \nTickets: \nKMA Members: FREE \nNon-Members: $5 \nCentral Cinema\n1205 N Central Street\, Knoxville\, TN

SUMMARY:June Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the KMA Book Club for an informative\, and often lively\, discussion of art inspired literature. KMA Book Club meets 3 times a year giving you plenty of time to read\, re-read\, and enjoy a book related to the arts.\n\nJune 2026: “My Friends”\, a Novel by Fredrik Backman\nMost people don’t even notice them—three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. But Louisa\, an aspiring artist herself\, knows otherwise\, and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures. \nTwenty-five years earlier\, in a distant seaside town\, a group of teenagers find refuge from their bruising home lives by spending long summer days on an abandoned pier. These lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning\, a reason to dream\, a reason to love. \nOut of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art\, a painting that will unexpectedly be placed into eighteen-year-old Louisa’s care. She embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. The closer she gets to the painting’s birthplace\, the more nervous she becomes about what she’ll find. Louisa is proof that happy endings don’t always take the form we expect in this stunning testament to the transformative\, timeless power of friendship and art. \nTo join or for more information please contact Margo Clark at mclark@knoxart.org \nFree & open to the public.
