DESCRIPTION:No-Man’s-Land | August 13 – November 8\, 2026 \nOpening Reception Thursday\, August 13th – 5:30 PM \nInspired by the visionary work of Kentucky coal-miner-turned-evangelist Harrison Mayes after he experienced a life-changing epiphany\, No-Man’s-Land explores genres\, beings\, and geographies that exceed singular definition. Born in Tennessee in 1898\, Mayes’ placed concrete beacons across the country\, with plans for them to reach outer space\, and beyond. He installed these markers in so-called “no-man’s-land”—narrow\, ambiguous strips of land between state and private property where no one authority could claim jurisdiction. \nThis exhibition looks to artists who work in similarly uncharted territory. DESCRIPTION:The Tennessee Valley Fair Student Art Exhibition: 50th Anniversary\nOctober 23–December 13\, 2026\nKramer Education Center\, Knoxville Museum of Art \nOpening Reception: Sunday\, November 1\, 2–4 p.m. \nCelebrating 50 years of recognizing the next generation of artists\, the Tennessee Valley Fair Student Art Exhibition honors the creativity and achievements of East Tennessee’s young artists. \nEstablished in 1976 to recognize outstanding student work in the visual arts\, the exhibition has grown into a lasting tradition. Originally sponsored by Tom Rechenbach and hosted annually by the Muse Science Center (formerly the East Tennessee Discovery Center)\, the exhibition continues today with support from Jerry’s Artarama. \nThe Rechenbach/Jerry’s Artarama Collection\, permanently housed at the Knoxville Museum of Art\, preserves a remarkable legacy of artistic achievement by middle and high school students throughout the region. Each year\, a jury of professional artists and educators selects a Best of Show artwork from the Tennessee Valley Fair Student Art Exhibition to become part of the collection. \nJoin us in celebrating this milestone anniversary and five decades of nurturing and recognizing the artistic talent of East Tennessee’s young people.

DESCRIPTION:Hai-Wen Lin – bittersun | October 2026 through February 2027 \nIn this forthcoming exhibition\, Taiwanese-American artist Hai-Wen Lin fashions garments as kites: creating sculptures that move between the body and the environment. Made with the intimacy of clothing and the logic of flight\, the works draw on visual traditions from Buddhist jiasha robes to Appalachian quilts\, becoming a practice of “tending”—a way\, as the artist says “to clothe the wind.” With delicacy and desire\, these works also care for bodies and landscapes that shift as constantly as the seasons. Moving between field and sky\, Lin’s work asks how we carry one another forward and what it means to belong—to the living\, the land\, and the cycles that tie them together.

DESCRIPTION:Lantern parades\, kite festivals\, and harvest carnivals celebrate the changing of seasons around the world and in our own back yard. KMA is pleased to be a host location for a Cattywampus Lantern Puppet Workshop on Sunday\, November 15th from 1-4pm. \nThis workshop is designed for individuals ages 10 & up who would like to learn how to create giant and small lantern puppets for Cattywampus’s inaugural Winter Solstice Lantern Parade happening on Saturday\, Dec. 19th\, 6-9pm at Seven Islands State Birding Park! \nMaterials will be provided for each participant to make and take their own small lantern puppet during our time together. We will also explore methods for creating larger-scale puppets using willow\, rattan\, coffee filters\, fabric\, lighting and more. \nSunday\, November 15\, 2026\n1:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nKnoxville Museum of Art – in Regal Commons on Garden Level \nCost: Sliding-scale donation ($0-25) \n*Please fill out a registration form for each individual you would like to reserve a spot for. SUMMARY:East Tennessee Regional Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:EAST TENNESSEE REGIONAL STUDENT ART EXHIBITION \nNovember 27\, 2026 – January 10\, 2027 \nETRSAE Soft Opening \nThe 21st Annual East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition is presented by the Knoxville Museum of Art each fall. The ETRSAE showcases the strength and diversity of art education programs in East Tennessee\, celebrates talented middle and high school students\, and supports arts education. This annual exhibition provides the opportunity for students to participate in a juried exhibition and to have their artworks displayed in a professional art museum environment. We are so delighted by the quality of the artworks\, the dedication of the teachers\, and the commitment of the museum staff to establish a museum and school tradition for our community. \nTeachers at public\, private\, and home schools across East Tennessee submit artwork by students in grades 6–12. The submissions go through an intensive jury process and are narrowed down to roughly 300 works of art to be displayed at the museum. Categories for the competition include ceramic\, drawing\, video production\, mixed media\, painting\, computer graphics\, sculpture\, digital or traditional photography\, and printmaking. \nThe Best-in-Show winner receives a Purchase Award of $500\, and the artwork becomes a permanent part of the collection of Mr. James Dodson\, on loan to the Knoxville Museum of Art’s Education Collection. The Best-in-Middle School winner receives $250. The “Best” in each of the 9 categories receives a cash award and will be included the TN State Student Art Best of the Best exhibition hosted by the Tennessee Arts Academy each summer. SUMMARY:Kevin Beasley
DESCRIPTION:The Appalachian Mountains\, which govern the winding highway traveled by artist Kevin Beasley during the development of his recent work\, can be described as “fold mountains” – created from two or more of the Earth’s tectonic plates pushing together. At these intersecting shores\, rock and debris are compressed into and within each other\, shedding individuality to forge a shared landscape. \nAkin to the convergent layers of geography and people that have formed this region\, Beasley’s work binds together disparate elements to re-fashion our understanding of place\, material\, and memory. This is a tapestry-like arena where history lives more concurrently than sequentially\, with traces and traumas floating within the fog of time. \nDrawing on his roots in the Southeast\, Kevin Beasley’s exhibition will navigate the multi-layered terrain of this region. Using textiles such as raw cotton and weathered clothing\, Beasley transforms familiar materials into landscapes both intimate and expansive\, connecting the region’s complex sociopolitical identity within his own childhood experiences.
