SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester – Melancholia in Arcadia
DESCRIPTION:Gabriel Lester | June 20 – August 29\, 2026 \nIn the first of an ongoing series of contemporary art installations at the Eugenia Williams House\, the Knoxville Museum of Art has invited Dutch artist Gabriel Lester to present a re-imagined version of his 2011 sculpture Melancholia in Arcadia. This haunting work was first displayed in Istanbul as a dedication to Lester’s dear friend\, Huseyin Bahri Alptekin\, who passed away in 2007. The title of the work is identical to a series of photographs Huseyin shot in Odessa\, Ukraine\, showing curtains fluttering softly within domestic spaces. These images inspired Lester’s installation of stiffened lace curtains\, frozen in time and space. Beyond the technical feat of making this happen\, the work refers to the gesture of opening the windows to set free the soul of the deceased\, as well as the idea of a spirit entering a room\, mysteriously lifting the curtains to announce its presence. \nBoth the concept and composition of this work furnish an evocative connection with the life and house of Eugenia Williams\, which are intertwined. Lester’s Melancholia recalls the losses Eugenia experienced. By the time a teenage Eugenia and her father moved to Lyons View Pike in 1916\, her mother and two younger siblings had died. After her father’s death and her divorce\, Eugenia boldly razed her father’s farmhouse to build the present house on this site. The spirit of this independent and mysterious woman suffuses the home she created for herself\, just as Lester’s billowing curtains suggest an otherworldly presence in its halls. \nBy presenting Lester’s work for this particular space\, we open up a captivating alchemy that elevates both the installation as well as the surrounding architecture. \n  \nHow to visit the exhibition: \nExhibition dates: June 20 to August 29\, 2026 \nGallery Hours: Saturdays\, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. \nLocation: Eugenia Williams House\, 4848 Lyons View Pike\, Knoxville\, TN 37919 \nAdmission: Free \nMelancholia in Arcadia: Gabriel Lester at the Eugenia Williams House is open to the public on Saturdays from noon to 4:00 p.m. from June 13 to August 29. No ticket or reservation is required for this free exhibition\, but space is limited. Visitors may enter the house on a first come\, first served basis as capacity allows. \nParking and Accessibility: Limited onsite parking is available on a first come\, first served basis in the Upper Parking Lot. The All Persons Trail – a 0.25 mile\, ADA-compliant path – leads directly to the House. Guests with limited mobility may request alternate parking arrangements by calling 865.606.0802. \nAbout the Eugenia Williams House: \nThe property’s 24 acres overlook the Tennessee River and the Great Smoky Mountains and are open to the public through a series of trails that can be accessed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Reserve your seat to Celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month this September with a Sazerac Mash Bill Tasting\, Hosted by Alan & Darrell Benton\, Dinner prepared by Chef John Bryant of Bistro by the Tracks \nOn Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, this dinner will center around the history of the Buffalo Trace Distillery as well as the history of Benton’s Country Ham. Chef John Bryant will curate a meal using Benton’s Country Ham products based on his vision to compliment and to enhance two bourbons from each of the four Buffalo Trace Distillery mash bills. One bourbon will be where the mash bill “starts” and the other will be where it “finishes.” Rye Mash #1 will feature an E.H. Taylor Selection and George T Stagg. Rye Mash #2 will feature Blanton’s Original Single Barrel Bourbon and Hancock’s President’s Reserve. \nThe Wheated Mash Bill will feature Burleson Group’s single barrel pick of Weller Antique 107 and the Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 15 yr . The final mash bill\, Rye Whiskey\, will feature Sazerac Rye 100 proof and the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 yr. The dinner will include a greeter cocktail and Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream as an after-dinner pour. \nAlan and/or Darrell Benton will speak to the history of Benton’s as well as their process. Also\, a representative from Knoxville Beverage/Sazerac will speak to the history of Buffalo Trace and the bourbons. \nProceeds from this event support ongoing efforts of the KMA to provide meaningful exhibitions\, art education programs\, and free admission. \nIndividual seats will be sold for $750 per seat. Only 20 seats available.

DESCRIPTION:Hai-Wen Lin | October 2026 through February 2027 \nIn this forthcoming exhibition\, Taiwanese-American artist Hai-Wen Lin fashions garments as kites: creating sculptures that move between the body and the environment. Made with the intimacy of clothing and the logic of flight\, the works draw on visual traditions from Buddhist jiasha robes to Appalachian quilts\, becoming a practice of “tending”—a way\, as the artist says “to clothe the wind.” With delicacy and desire\, these works also care for bodies and landscapes that shift as constantly as the seasons. Moving between field and sky\, Lin’s work asks how we carry one another forward and what it means to belong—to the living\, the land\, and the cycles that tie them together.

DESCRIPTION:The Appalachian Mountains\, which govern the winding highway traveled by artist Kevin Beasley during the development of his recent work\, can be described as “fold mountains” – created from two or more of the Earth’s tectonic plates pushing together. At these intersecting shores\, rock and debris are compressed into and within each other\, shedding individuality to forge a shared landscape. \nAkin to the convergent layers of geography and people that have formed this region\, Beasley’s work binds together disparate elements to re-fashion our understanding of place\, material\, and memory. This is a tapestry-like arena where history lives more concurrently than sequentially\, with traces and traumas floating within the fog of time. \nDrawing on his roots in the Southeast\, Kevin Beasley’s exhibition will navigate the multi-layered terrain of this region. Using textiles such as raw cotton and weathered clothing\, Beasley transforms familiar materials into landscapes both intimate and expansive\, connecting the region’s complex sociopolitical identity within his own childhood experiences.
