SUMMARY:The Body is a Drum\, The Voice a Song\, The Soul a Fire
DESCRIPTION:Labor is more than work; it is an act of care. It binds people not just through toil\, but through collective action. On the factory floor\, at the loom\, along the picket line—these are spaces where effort meets empathy\, where shared struggle becomes a living record\, a force\, a song. This exhibition brings together the work of Tabitha Arnold\, Dianna Settles\, and Lewis Hine— artists who call attention to the lives shaped by labor: its intimacies\, its struggles\, its persistence. Arnold’s tapestries weave together a history of labor movements in the Southeast\, Settles’ paintings reveal the collective heartbeat where everyday life and organizing work meet\, and Hine’s photographs capture the daily realities and inequities of industrial labor in early 20th-century East Tennessee. The exhibition draws from the audio archives of the Highlander Center\, a wellspring of resistance that has preserved the music and voices of labor organizers\, civil rights leaders\, and the people who built this country with their hands. These images and sounds\, both past and present\, are not just records of labor\, but testaments to the histories that shape us still. \nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS:\nThe Body is a Drum\, The Voice a Song\, The Soul a Fire Opening Reception I Thursday\, November 6\, 5:30-8:30 pm\nMorristown: in the air and sun Screening at Central Cinema I Wednesday\, December 3\, 6:00-7:30 pm\nPunch Needle Embroidery with Tabitha Arnold | Saturday\, December 6\, 10:00 am-1:00 pm\nThe Voice a Song: Oral Histories and Songs of Labor and Community in East Tennessee | Saturday\, January 31\, 2:00-3:30 pm\nSparky and Rhonda Rucker at the Laurel Theater | Saturday\, February 7\, 8:00-10:00 pm\n \nPresented by Molly and Bob Joy. SUMMARY:Cocktails & Conversation with John Sanders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Cocktails & Conversation with John Sanders as he shares his discovery\, passion\, and restoration of the Little Switzerland neighborhood through the exhibition Seeds of Regionalism. Sanders was attending the University of Tennessee as an architecture student when he first became aware of the neighborhood of modern regionalism homes built in South Knoxville by Alfred and Jane West Clauss in the 1930s and 40s. Today\, these restored homes carry on the legacy of modern regionalism in the South. \nCocktails & Conversation is a casual lecture and discussion series that explores the art and artist of the KMA collection and temporary exhibitions. Enjoy a cocktail while you learn from artists\, curators\, historians\, and community leaders on a variety of art media and styles. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER—\nJOHN LYNCH SANDERS\, FAIA\nLEED AP PRINCIPAL-IN-CHARGE + FOUNDING PARTNER SANDERS PACE ARCHITECTURE \nJohn is a founding partner of Sanders Pace Architecture\, created in 2002 primarily for a focus on design opportunities within Knoxville’s urban core and its immediate surrounding neighborhoods. His passion for design can be seen on the challenging projects that he and his firm have been involved within those areas. John’s work is meaningful\, creative\, and inspirational. His influence is evident in the thoughtful rehabilitation of forgotten\, neglected buildings in fringe neighborhoods\, elevation of overlooked project typologies\, and energetic service through teaching and civic engagement. John is an active member of the AIA and has served on the State Board and planning committees and as local chapter president. He has served and chaired on several chapter design award juries and in 2015 and 2019 served as co-chair of the AIA Tennessee State Convention. During his tenures on the AIA East Tennessee and AIA Tennessee Chapters’ Board\, Mr. Sanders was integral in creating and implementing a new licensee program to recognize the accomplishments of emerging professionals at local and state levels and formally celebrating the milestone of licensure and they have become a signature part of his region and state design awards programs. John continues to chair the Programming Committee for AIA East Tennessee where he leads the programming efforts for the Design Feed Lecture Series. John is a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he has served as an Adjunct Lecturer. He continues to participate as an invited studio critic and juror for the College of Architecture and Design. \nJohn was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2018 in recognition of his contributions to the profession and was awarded the AIA East Tennessee Gold Medal in 2024 along with SPA founding partner\, Brandon F. Pace. The Gold Medal is the AIA East Tennessee chapter’s highest honor that can be bestowed upon one of its members. Brandon and John were also named 2024 Preservationists of the Year as defined by Knox Heritage. \nLight refreshments and a cash bar are available beginning at 5:30 pm\, and the lecture begins promptly at 6:00 pm\, followed by time for audience questions. \nFree and open to the public!  \nIMAGE: Bruce Cole for the Wall Street Journal

SUMMARY:Dine & Discover with Avigail Sachs
DESCRIPTION:Join us on your lunch break for a discussion on the Clauss Family Legacy with Avigail Sachs\, Professor and Interim Associate Dean for Research\, College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee. Sachs will share her discoveries on the life and work of Jane West Clauss that she found during her research for a biography in The Collection of Women of the 20th Century American Architecture. As well as stories from Alfred Clauss’s work at TVA\, and memories of the Clauss Family’s time in Knoxville. \nDine & Discover is a lunchtime lecture where you can learn about the art in the KMA’s collection or changing exhibitions. Hear from artists\, curators\, historians\, and community leaders on a variety of art topics during your lunch break. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER—\nAvigail Sachs teaches the history and theory of architecture and landscape at the University of Tennessee and studies the design professions in the United States. She is especially interested in the relationship between design and research and the role of each in the formation of the design disciplines and professions. In 2019\, she published a biography of Jane West Clauss as part The Collection of Women of the 20th Century American Architecture\, which is supported by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts. Sachs is fascinated by the history of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and its comprehensive impact on the environment of the Valley and of Appalachia. The TVA is the subject of her book The Garden in the Machine: Planning and Democracy in the Tennessee Valley Authority (University of Virginia Press\, 2023). She is currently completing a collaborative project with colleague and friend Micah Rutenberg titled The Mechanized Landscape: Statecraft and Environment in the Tennessee Valley Authority. This project combines maps\, photographs and text to provide a visual study of how the TVA’s goals for a democratic society were implemented across a large region and how they instigated a fundamental change in the environment and in the lives of the people living in it. \nLecture begins at 12:00 pm; bring your lunch or order in advance by emailing dfeliciano@knoxart.org by 10:00 am Monday\, October 6. Boxed lunches are $15 (cash or credit the day of the program) and will have an option of sandwich choice\, chips\, and cookie or salad choice\, roll\, and cookie. Vegetarian options available. Water and soft drinks will be provided. \nFree and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Seeds of Regionalism The Clauss Legacy: Early Modernism in the South
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition excavates the unheralded legacy of Alfred and Jane West Clauss\, who\, in 1939\, created the first modern deed-restricted subdivision in America-known colloquially in Knoxville as “Little Switzerland.” In the process\, the Clausses laid the groundwork for what we now recognize as regional modernism. \nThrough original artifacts—including photographs\, drawings\, posters\, furniture\, graphic maps\, home videos\, and timelines—Seeds of Regionalism traces the DNA of this architectural subdivision and explores how the Clausses’ move to East Tennessee inspired them to experiment with blending modernist ideas with local traditions and a strong sense of place. \nEXHIBITION RESOURCES:\nSeeds of Regionalism video \nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS:\nSeeds of Regionalism Opening Reception I Thursday\, September 4\, 5:30-8:30 pm\nSecond Sunday Art Activity | Sunday\, September 14\, 1:00-4:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Docent Tour | Sunday\, September 14\, 2:00-3:00 pm\nMy Architect Screening at Central Cinema | Wednesday\, October 1\, 6:00-8:00 pm\nRegional Modernist Pottery Series | October 7\, 9\, 21 & 23\, 5:30-8:00 pm\nDine & Discover with Avigail Sachs | Wednesday\, October 8\, 12:00-1:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Art Activity | Sunday\, October 12\, 1:00-4:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Docent Tour | Sunday\, October 12\, 2:00-3:00 pm\nCocktails & Conversation with John Sanders | Thursday\, October 23\, 5:30-7:30 pm\nDeaf Night at the KMA | Monday\, October 27\, 5:30-8:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Docent Tour | Sunday\, November 9\, 2:00-3:00 pm \n \n\n  \n  \nBenefactor Sponsors: AiA East Tennessee\, Barbara & Steve Apking\, Sandi Burdick & Tom Boyd\, Susan French\, Cecilia & Caesar Stair IV\, Fred Trainer\, Nancy Sharp Voith & Kenneth Stark Family \nDirectors Circle Sponsors: Julia & Gary Bentley\, John M.
