SUMMARY:Dine & Discover with Avigail Sachs
DESCRIPTION:Join us on your lunch break for a discussion on the Clauss Family Legacy with Avigail Sachs\, Professor and Interim Associate Dean for Research\, College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee. Sachs will share her discoveries on the life and work of Jane West Clauss that she found during her research for a biography in The Collection of Women of the 20th Century American Architecture. As well as stories from Alfred Clauss’s work at TVA\, and memories of the Clauss Family’s time in Knoxville. \nDine & Discover is a lunchtime lecture where you can learn about the art in the KMA’s collection or changing exhibitions. Hear from artists\, curators\, historians\, and community leaders on a variety of art topics during your lunch break. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER—\nAvigail Sachs teaches the history and theory of architecture and landscape at the University of Tennessee and studies the design professions in the United States. She is especially interested in the relationship between design and research and the role of each in the formation of the design disciplines and professions. In 2019\, she published a biography of Jane West Clauss as part The Collection of Women of the 20th Century American Architecture\, which is supported by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts. Sachs is fascinated by the history of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and its comprehensive impact on the environment of the Valley and of Appalachia. The TVA is the subject of her book The Garden in the Machine: Planning and Democracy in the Tennessee Valley Authority (University of Virginia Press\, 2023). She is currently completing a collaborative project with colleague and friend Micah Rutenberg titled The Mechanized Landscape: Statecraft and Environment in the Tennessee Valley Authority. This project combines maps\, photographs and text to provide a visual study of how the TVA’s goals for a democratic society were implemented across a large region and how they instigated a fundamental change in the environment and in the lives of the people living in it. \nLecture begins at 12:00 pm; bring your lunch or order in advance by emailing dfeliciano@knoxart.org by 10:00 am Monday\, October 6. Boxed lunches are $15 (cash or credit the day of the program) and will have an option of sandwich choice\, chips\, and cookie or salad choice\, roll\, and cookie. Vegetarian options available. Water and soft drinks will be provided. \nFree and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Seeds of Regionalism The Clauss Legacy: Early Modernism in the South
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition excavates the unheralded legacy of Alfred and Jane West Clauss\, who\, in 1939\, created the first modern deed-restricted subdivision in America-known colloquially in Knoxville as “Little Switzerland.” In the process\, the Clausses laid the groundwork for what we now recognize as regional modernism. \nThrough original artifacts—including photographs\, drawings\, posters\, furniture\, graphic maps\, home videos\, and timelines—Seeds of Regionalism traces the DNA of this architectural subdivision and explores how the Clausses’ move to East Tennessee inspired them to experiment with blending modernist ideas with local traditions and a strong sense of place. \nEXHIBITION RESOURCES:\nSeeds of Regionalism video \nEXHIBITION-RELATED PROGRAMS:\nSeeds of Regionalism Opening Reception I Thursday\, September 4\, 5:30-8:30 pm\nSecond Sunday Art Activity | Sunday\, September 14\, 1:00-4:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Docent Tour | Sunday\, September 14\, 2:00-3:00 pm\nMy Architect Screening at Central Cinema | Wednesday\, October 1\, 6:00-8:00 pm\nRegional Modernist Pottery Series | October 7\, 9\, 21 & 23\, 5:30-8:00 pm\nDine & Discover with Avigail Sachs | Wednesday\, October 8\, 12:00-1:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Art Activity | Sunday\, October 12\, 1:00-4:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Docent Tour | Sunday\, October 12\, 2:00-3:00 pm\nCocktails & Conversation with John Sanders | Thursday\, October 23\, 5:30-7:30 pm\nDeaf Night at the KMA | Monday\, October 27\, 5:30-8:00 pm\nSecond Sunday Docent Tour | Sunday\, November 9\, 2:00-3:00 pm \n \n\n  \n  \nBenefactor Sponsors: AiA East Tennessee\, Barbara & Steve Apking\, Sandi Burdick & Tom Boyd\, Susan French\, Cecilia & Caesar Stair IV\, Fred Trainer\, Nancy Sharp Voith & Kenneth Stark Family \nDirectors Circle Sponsors: Julia & Gary Bentley\, John M. SUMMARY:Shadows & Light by Circle Modern Dance
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the museum for a collaboration of dance\, music\, and art as Circle Modern Dance\, Knoxville Museum of Art\, and Composer William Wright present Shadows & Light. A dance show that moves throughout the museum\, inspired by the art of the KMA’s permanent collection and temporary exhibition\, Electricity for All. \nThis is a site-specific performance that creates a summer’s evening of dance in conversation with the collection throughout the museum and its grounds. “The audience is invited to be engaged observers\, noticing their effect on the dancers and how the dancers affect them\, inspiring them to move out of their seats on the way to the experiences that await in the upper levels of the KMA.” \nFeaturing original choreography by Angela Hill\, Kimberly Matibag\, Nate Barrett\, Heather Coker Hawkins\, and Jill Frere\, this immersive performance invites you to see art in a whole new way—through motion\, energy\, and sound. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm. Performance begins in Bailey Hall at 7:00 pm. Light refreshments and cash bar will be available starting at 6:30 pm and again during a brief intermission. Because of this performance’s progressive nature throughout the museum’s three floors\, seating is not guaranteed. \nTickets are $20 in advance on TicketTailor and $25 at the door with a $5 discount for students\, seniors\, military service members\, and Knoxville Museum of Art Members. Shadows & Light is a show for all ages and participates in the Penny4Arts program\, allowing children to attend for one penny when accompanied by an adult. \nPURCHASE TICKETS\nVisit circlemoderndance.com for additional show information. \nCollaboration Partners: Circle Modern Dance and Composer William Wright draw inspiration from the KMA’s Collection in Shadows & Light.
