Born in Birmingham and raised in nearby Bessemer, Alabama, Ms. Johnnie Nathan began her singing career at the early age of 13 as a soloist in choirs at church and school. At age 15, she became a member of a band called The Corrupters and had to be sneaked into clubs to perform. Two years later, she went back to singing gospel music, joining Blind Billy & The Gospel Revelettes, which opened for many nationally touring gospel groups, such as The Mighty Clouds of Joy, when they came to Birmingham. The Revelettes were later recruited to sing background vocals for various R&B recording groups at Hemphill Recording Studios. Her singing career took a back seat when she got married, became a mother, went to college, and got a day job. Then in 1996, at age 45, after casually singing one evening at a Birmingham karaoke bar, she wound up singing in and winning the Alabama state championship, and went on to compete in the national contest hosted by the infamous comedian Sinbad in Orlando, Florida, and aired on the Fox Network. Her love for singing was rekindled, and it grew as she relocated to Maryland and then Texas, becoming a fixture on the local music scenes in both states. When she eventually returned to live in Birmingham, her singing career continued to flourish. She formed a band, Ms. Johnnie & The Jammers, and with her repertoire of Old School R&B, Classic Soul Blues, Gospel, Jazz and even a little Country, they performed in festivals and venues all across the state. Ms. Johnnie Nathan was inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame twice, as an “Alabama Ambassador” in 2014 and as a “Great Blues Singer” in 2017.
When Ms. Johnnie’s band, The Jammers, couldn’t make the trip to Knoxville with her, we arranged to put her together with some of Knoxville’s best jammers: Richard “Humble Jones” Bryant on keyboards, Jon Mason on guitar, Manneth Webster on drums, and Jon Augustus on bass. And thus, The Humble Jones Jammers were created. This combination of Birmingham and Knoxville musicians is going to be an epic show!
