Cocktails & Conversation with Courtney Egan

June 27, 2023 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Join us for an evening in the gallery with the artist Courtney Egan as we explore the relationship that she creates between the natural world around us and the technology that is so prevalent in our daily lives. The Native Plant Rescue Squad will also present during the event. Native Plant Rescue Squad (NPRS) is an educational non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the rich diversity of the native flora in East Tennessee.  NPRS works with entities such as builders, developers, and landowners to rescue native plants that would otherwise be destroyed during clearing, building, and development. The rescued plants are then made available for educational opportunities and restoration projects with the goal of increasing the overall ecological health of our region.

Free and open to the public! Cash bar and light refreshments. Eventbrite reservations are requested—no promo code required. Space is limited!

Courtney Egan’s projection-based sculptural installations deliver an experience that is both pleasing and disconcerting. The ethereal projections – converging on walls, floors, and sculptural elements – are inspired by the growing frequency of human exposure to nature via computers or television. Egan creates stunning yet “subtly impossible, hybrid tableaus,” which envelope the viewer in a conversation between memory of the natural world and a new experience with a plant or flower. She explains the fundamental irony of the experience, stating, “We get closer and farther away from the natural world simultaneously when we experience it through a technological lens.”
