Diedra Harris-Kelley–artist, educator, and co-director of the Romare Bearden Foundation–explores the work of Romare Bearden (1911-1988) and his journey to become the most iconic collage artist of the 20th century. Bearden used the medium to create rich and complex scenes whose compelling narratives conveyed his experiences growing up in the South, living in New York, and traveling abroad. Harris-Kelley will look at the artist’s early work and relate it to the vibrant and detailed collage works of his later years, drawing on examples from the exhibition Under Construction: Collage from The Mint Museum currently on view at the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Featured Cocktail Recipe: Apple Butter Collage Cocktail

Telling stories of everyday life through collage, apple butter, and Southern Comfort. Romare Bearden’s collages draw inspiration from the human experience using familiar images of everyday life spliced together to create new narratives. The drink itself, a blend of fruit, spices, and whisky, is a kind of collage with the different assortment of spices in the apple butter paired with the aromatic flavors from the liquor. Like collage, this cocktail brings together familiar flavors to create a fresh experience.

Ingredients:

4 oz. Southern Comfort
1/2 oz. lemon juice or juice from 1 lemon
2 Tbsp. apple butter
3-4 dashes aromatic bitters
Apple slice or cinnamon stick for garnish
