ABOUT THE FILM—
The Night of the Hunter is a 1955 American Southern Gothic horror-thriller film directed by Charles Laughton and starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and Lillian Gish. The screenplay by James Agee was based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Davis Grubb. Though the film was not widely accepted at its release in 1955, it grew to be celebrated and influential in the following decades. This special screening of the 16mm film version of The Night of the Hunter is a collaboration between Central Cinema and the Knoxville Museum of Art, and will be free for KMA members and $5 for non-members.
Knoxville-born James Agee’s collaboration with photographer Walker Evans, Let Us Know Praise Famous Men, was an undeniable influence for photojournalism and the arts of the 20th century. “Finding Higher Ground” is an ongoing series of events organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art that is intended to expand upon the historical KMA exhibition and catalog Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee. The KMA’s Higher Ground spotlight exhibition Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South celebrates the growth of the museum’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. It also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent, influential artists with ties to the area, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. This Higher Ground spotlight exhibition will be on view through April 12, 2026.
