Curator’s Talk on Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South
KMA curator Stephen Wicks will lead an informal talk on Raking Light: Photographs of East Tennessee and the American South, a special display within the museum’s flagship Higher Ground exhibition. Raking Light features a selection of 19 black and white prints that attest to the growth of the Knoxville Museum of Art’s photography collection through the recent acquisition of works documenting the region’s shifting social landscape. The selection also attests to the richness of East Tennessee’s photographic history, a history shaped by outstanding local artistic talent, influential artists with ties to the area, and visiting photographers drawn here by an abundance of compelling subject matter. Together, they helped document the region’s evolving identity over the course of much of the twentieth century and, in several cases, their artistic paths intersected.
Cocktails and light refreshments at 5:30 pm, the talk will begin at 6:00 pm in Regal Commons. Guests are invited to explore the Spotlight on Higher Ground exhibition – Raking Light in the 2nd floor gallery before and after the talk.
FREE and open to the public!
