Join the Knoxville Museum of Art at Central Cinema for a special screening of Secret Mall Apartment (2024), a wildly inventive documentary directed by Jeremy Workman.

In 2003, eight young Rhode Islanders secretly created an apartment inside the Providence Place Mall and lived there for four years, documenting their unconventional home and artistic experiment along the way. They smuggled in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even constructed a wall using more than two tons of cinderblock.

What began as an audacious act of rebellion became something much more meaningful: a creative community, a space for artistic expression, a response to gentrification, and an exploration of what it means to reclaim an unexpected place as your own. Featuring footage captured by the artists themselves, Secret Mall Apartment offers a funny, fascinating, and poignant look at art, friendship, community, and challenging the boundaries of public and private space.
