Currents: Recent Art from East Tennessee and Beyond

October 10, 2012

October 10, 2012 (Knoxville, TN) – Beginning November 9, the KMA will house the ongoing exhibition Currents: Recent Art from East Tennessee and Beyond featuring works from the museum’s own collection.

While the museum’s Higher Ground gallery celebrates our region’s art history, Currents examines recent developments in international contemporary art. It features a selection from the KMA’s holdings of works by emerging and established artists currently working in East Tennessee and beyond. In this way, it represents a continuation of Higher Ground into the present and recent past. As in Higher Ground, the display in Currents will be rotated periodically in order to showcase recent acquisitions.

The broad variety of works in Currents mirrors contemporary art’s seemingly countless threads of development. Among the rotating selection will be works by artists who seek to explore new creative territory by combining unorthodox techniques and materials, blurring the lines between description and invention, and incorporating digital media. Others examine historical traditions in order to present them in contemporary contexts rich with new meaning and cultural associations.
